Should NFL players really get suspended for smoking marijuana?

Should they even be tested for it?

Should NFL players really get suspended for smoking marijuana?nba lottery

No and no. Are they tested for alcohol or tobacco (not to give the prohibitionists any ideas!)?

Chris S, I think you're a waste of life and you shouldn't judge whole huge groups of people based on a few experiences. get a clue. Where do fascists like Vegas Matt come from? Let's of you should get into a time machine and go back to Nazi Germany.

To the moron below me, I'm no hippy (there haven't ben actual hippies for more than 30 years, @sswipe) and where are your statistics to prove that??????? I mean real stats, not htose generated by the govt. to back its policies.

Should NFL players really get suspended for smoking marijuana?nba champs ,nba teams

It is still against the law and against league policy so YES they should. As long as it is against the law the league has no choice.
If I were a team owner, I would suspend any player for testing positive to illegal drug use - including marijuana. Why? Because I would want the most physically and mentally able players on my team at any given time.

If players are expected to adhere to strict policies on their workout routines and diet, I wouldn't throw all that effort away by looking the other way on drug use. Like it or not, even marijauna has negative health effects.
To the hippy above me, companies that drug test get more production out of less employees when they fire people for MJ use. My question to you is why do you think the rest of us need to pick up the slack for lazy pot heads

To answer the question, it's in the bylaws, and they are paid millions. Part of what the NFL makes it's money on is image, and being a druggie is bad for the image of the league.
Its illegal in the US and the NFL. If the players don't like that then they shouldn't have agreed to it in their union contract or can go play somewhere else.

That said the only effect it will have on them is a negative.
As long as pot is illegal, they're going to. :(
yes. just becsue pot heads are losers...i hate them all...they are the stupidest, most inconsiderate mororns on the earth. most people smoke to be "cool" but in reality, they are are wastes of life....
Yes. It's illegal. The rules are clear. If you're stupid enough to get caught you deserve what you get.

Should it be illegal is a whole different argument/question.
If it was ever legalized they wouldn't. There's just a stigma attached to it because of our alcohol culture. Anybody who knows anything about pot knows its nowhere near as debilitating as alcohol. But the NFL doesn't want to be seen as an organization that endorses committing crimes, because at the end of the day pot is still illegal. They would get criticized by even more people if they didn't test for it. The NFL is about making money and looking good. So they did the research before they wrote their policies in order to keep the majority of viewers happy.
People seem to forget that despite the pedestal we put professional athletes on, NFL players are still just employees. So your true question should be: Should employers be allowed to suspend employees for smoking pot? Or even: Should an employer be allowed to suspend an employee for committing a crime while under their employment?

The answer is yes. It's actually pretty lenient to just suspend them instead of firing them for actively participating in illegal activities.
Sports are the antithesis of drugs. If they weren't, you'd be signing your kids up to smoke crack. The NFL represents the highest athletic achievement for the sport of football. No true fan should tolerate a substance that impairs/reduces a players ability to perform at their maximum level. Of course marijuana merits suspention. If you disagree, you don't understand what athletics/sports are all about.
I don't think so, but then again where would the line be drawn? Would cocaine be okay? As long as it is not performance enhancing?
YES!! It's against the law! If anyone else were to be on drugs they would get fired too. Football players get suspended with their millions of dollars.
No. I think they should get the Nobel Prize for smoking marijuana.

Seriously, I don't care what these people are doing in their homes, but they sign million dollar deals with contingencies. I don't get paid millions, but if someone offered me a million dollars with the catch that I had to take drug tests, I wouldn't mind.
They should be required to give me all their weed so I have plenty to smoke while I watch them play.
